I posted this in the Spanish forum, but there were no replies. Maybe nobody knows what the heck model this gun is, or maybe the right people didn't see it.So, I've decided to post it here too:Bought myself a new (used) Laurona Over Under in 20 gauge. I've been trying to figure out what model it is.Its 20 gauge box lock, Extractors, 3 inch chamber, 28 inch barrels. Vent rib on top, and no centre rib. Fixed chokes, full on top, mod in the bottom.
Pistol Grip with Beavertail fore end.Double triggers. Engraving is rolled with dogs on one side of the reciever, birds on the other. Checkering I believe is known as 'skip line', not sure how many lines per inch it is, but I'm not too concerned about that.
Date code say R.1 if I recall correctly, so made in 1973. Or at least the barrels were proofed in 1973.I kinda like the set up this thing has, I've never heard of it on anything other than Lauronas. The two triggers can be used as either a normal double trigger set up, front fires bottom barrel, rear fires top barrel. OR you can use each one as a single non selective trigger.Pull the front trigger twice, bottom barrel fires, then top barrel, or pull the rear, and top fires followed by bottom.Kind of a neat set up if you ask me.The gun itself is a pleasure to shoot. Thus far all I do is shoot trap with it, and I can easily break 20+ birds in a round. Not world class scores by any means, but fairly respectable. Or so I like to think.
Probably the main reason I find it a pleasure to shoot is because it kicks a bit less than the 12 I usually use, though the recoil pad on this thing is hard and crusty. Its factory, but after nearly 50 years.
I bet if I replaced it with a limbsaver grind to fit like I did on my V Sarasqueta, it would be a dream to shoot, or close to it.Now for the mystery.I'm from Canada, and I'll assume that the gun was originally imported to Canada. The 2015 Standard Catalog of firearms, dosn't seem to list a gun of my description in its pages. It is of course a huge book, with thousands of listings, and the authors would have a hard time listing all guns imported from every country. It lists similar models and I thought I had it narrowed down, until I saw a mark that made the mystery even larger.Model 67 listed as being 12 gauge only, box lock with extractors, with Skip Line checkering.Model 71 listed as 'similar to model 67', but no mention of it coming in 20 gauge. Something that I've seen on other listings. My reciever is, or seems to be, finished in bright chrome (its pretty shiny) and has the roll engraving with dogs on one side, birds on the other.
It notes that earlier models had a solid centre rib, blued barrels, while later models had solid ribbed black chrome barrels. The model 82 is described as 12 gauge only, with the various sub models not really fitting the description of mine anyway. Different engraving, Tulip fore end etc.The model 83,84 and 85 were listed as being available with an extra set of 20 gauge barrels, with Laurona's 'multi choke' system.
Since my barrels are fixed choke, that doesn't seem likely that it was one of those. After that, the Silhouette models, are far enough away from the description of my gun that I needn't bother with them. So, the big mystery here is this: I figured it was just some random 20 gauge model that got imported at some random time, sold by some random place in Canada in 1973, until I saw mark stamped on the reciever that said '12-76', which of course, were it stamped on the barrels would indicate 12 gauge, 3 inch chambers. That is now why I think that it was a model that was originally available with 2 sets of barrels, but in the standard Catalog, the only models listed that were available with both 12 and 20 gauge barrels, the 20 gauge (and maybe the 12s too?) were threaded for choke tubes. Here are pics for you experts who might be able to shed some light on this:First pic, end on with the receiver, as you can see at the bottom is the 12-76The ONLY thing I can think of that might identify the the specific model is the ' FM. No' across from the 12-76. Its also stamped on the barrels. As far as I can tell, I have been able to identify every other proof mark on the gun, from choke markings, date code, serial number etc.Actually, thats not true, there is a Z68 stamped several times throughout the gun on various parts that I'm not sure what it means.
You'll see it in some later pictures. (But not this one I don't think)Some of the barrel markings. You can see the date code of R.1More barrel markings, and you can see the 'Z68', as well as the 'FM. No' just above the serial number, its a bit hard to see because of the glare. Now some beauty shots:Bonus action shots:You can see the Z68 a couple more times here:Hammers cocked. One hammer down.
